Plans for a new micro-pub on Market Street were announced yesterday – and Westhoughton is very excited by them.

The reaction to the plan to convert 88 Market Street, which has been predominantly empty since November 2009, was staggering.

Westhoughton councillor David Wilkinson, who is leading a campaign to make it easier for new businesses to set up in the town, said: “It is fantastic to see a local couple investing in Westhoughton and wanting to open up a new business.

“These micro-pubs are becoming increasingly popular wherever you go.”

David Wilkinson is campaigning on a number of issues:

  • Increasing the £5,000 grants for start-up businesses to £20,000 to match those offered in Bolton town centre. Westhoughton should be treated fairly by Bolton Council.
  • Making it easier for local people who start-up new businesses to access the grants through the complicated application process and raise greater awareness that support is available.
  • Develop the former Gaeity snooker hall site for retail use NOT more houses.
  • Put pressure on the landlords who own Westhoughton’s remaining empty shops to let out the units so new shops can open.

Here are 13 of your best reasons why Westhoughton really wants this micro-pub.

1. It’s something different

“Shame that the pet store didn’t work out, liked that shop, but must admit I really like the idea of a micro brewery. Something different”

“It’s going to be a quiet place to have a pint, I believe. Everywhere else is a thousand decibels or the spoons (no atmosphere).”

“A micro brewery sounds great, fresh enterprise in our town”

2. Horwich already has a string of successful micro-pubs

“Great news, something like brewery bar in Horwich would be good”

“Great idea, heard good things about the one in Horwich”

3. It will fill a long-standing empty shop

“What does it matter? It gets rid of another empty shop. As long as we don’t get anymore takeaways, it’s all good in my book.”

4. The prospect of good beer

“It’s about the beer not the atmosphere you degenerates…”

5. It’s a local couple behind the idea

“I’ll give it a go. Good luck to em. Also that’s my pals van and he’s doing the work on the outside, so it should look good.”
