Bolton Council has been criticised for selling off land for exclusive homes as the first of the 28 new houses off Church Street were built.

The new homes are being constructed on a site bounded by James Street, Wellington Street and Church Street.

Westhoughton town councillor David Wilkinson said it was wrong that Bolton Council had sold the land for luxury homes when the demand for rented accommodation for older people was huge.

He said: “This is another example of the council putting profits before people. Of course rented accommodation for older people doesn’t bring in as much council tax, yet this is what Westhoughton desperately needs.”

Planning permission was approved on the site by Bolton’s Labour-run Council despite concerns raised by residents about the mounting traffic congestion in the area.

Labour town councillors were also criticised earlier this year when they backed the developer’s bland name of Woodvale for the development, rather than choosing a name better connected to Westhoughton.

When surveyed, 93% of Westhoughton residents said they backed Liberal Democrat councillor David Wilkinson’s idea of picking a name of local significance instead.
