Cliff Morris clings on to power – DESPITE vote to get rid of him

Beleaguered Bolton Council leader Cliff Morris is clinging onto power thanks to the support of his Labour councillors in Westhoughton.

It comes despite Labour members in Bolton West voting 50 to 19 against his failed leadership in a no confidence vote, according to The Bolton News.

Cliff’s sitting councillors were said to have thrown their support behind the leader – who presided over the Asons scandal – but were outnumbered by the membership.

What have we learnt from this? That Cliff Morris will continue to have his cake and eat it whilst Labour are allowed to rule over Westhoughton.

Despite the infighting, little is expected to change with the leader and his executive team keeping elected councillors onside.

Cliff told the Bolton News that he was ‘disappointed’ by the move but insisted his leadership was “not a matter for the wider Labour Party”.

The vote comes just days after Frank White was removed as chairman of the Bolton Labour Party with party secretary Sheila Jones.

It is understood the motion was put forward by Ms Jones.

They are understood to have questioned the suitability of Cllr Ismail Ibrahim, who was exposed last year for not paying his council tax on time.

He failed a Labour interview to be reselected as a potential candidate – but successfully appealed with the support of Cllr Morris.
