A 40-year-old pub has been demolished to make way for new houses.

The Windmill Inn on Chorley Road is being knocked down to pave the way for two semi-detached houses and a two-storey apartment block to house 8 flats.
It is one of a number of pubs to shut its doors in Westhoughton.

Councillor David Wilkinson objected to the demolition, instead preferring developers to work with the existing building, but his fears were overturned by Labour officials.

He said: “Personally, I wish we could extend the existing building and keep the character of the pub there.

“I must say I’m not convinced by this at all. To my mind, the cars parked where they’re proposing will have to reverse on to the A6 which I am not thrilled about.

“Also, the design is bland and boring and will do little for the area in making it more attractive.”
