Hundreds of houses could be built in Wingates after Bolton Council sold a key piece of land, it is feared.
Westhoughton councillor David Wilkinson has uncovered that the council recently sold a piece of open space next to 49 Manchester Road that, if used by a developer, could become the gateway to a mega-estate running from as far as Wingates Lane to the railway bridge and right up to the motorway.
It is already known that some of the land nearby is owned by developers and its close proximity to the motorway could make it an attractive option for future housebuilding.
Councillor Wilkinson said: “Many residents will be alarmed by this news as they already have huge concerns about the levels of traffic along the A6 and on roads such as Church Street. Hundreds of extra cars on the road would only exacerbate the problem.”
