Westhoughton voters set to head to the polls in by-election

Westhoughton North and Hunger Hill voters have been badly let down by both Tory and Labour politicians.

A Tory councillor quit just 5 months after being elected, leaving voters forking out for a £10,000 by-election.

The missing councillor failed to show up at Bolton Council meetings, leaving residents unrepresented - but still took their allowance. The Tory candidate this year lives in Horwich.

Meanwhile, Labour council bosses treated themselves to a massive pay rise, as one of their first actions after gaining power in Bolton Town Hall.

A by-election is going to take place on Thursday 16 November, when voters can choose a new, local and hard-working councillor.

Experienced Liberal Democrat councillor Deirdre McGeown, who lives in the ward, has promised, if elected, to show up and do the job.

Councillor Arthur Price, who was elected in May, said: “Deirdre has the dedication that Westhoughton North and Hunger Hill needs. She has shown this in her year as Town Mayor.

“Voters have a chance with Deirdre to vote for someone with genuine commitment over yet more false promises and hollow words.”

Deirdre’s civic pride

Local campaigner Deirdre McGeown has had the amazing honour of representing Westhoughton as its Town Mayor.

Deirdre is raising money for local good causes and supporting grassroots community organisations.

She has also represented the town council at important events such as the Pretoria Pit Disaster commemorations and Remembrance Sunday.

Town councillors had the memorial to those who lost their lives in the pit disaster repointed so that we can continue to remember them.

Deirdre said: “It is a pleasure to work with so many community groups and individuals.”
